Just a few hours from London, the Quay Hotel & Spa in Wales offers a refurbished wellness suite, personalised treatments and tranquil views over Conwy Estuary.
For busy professionals, the hardest part of taking a break often isn't deciding to get away, or even managing to wrestle a few days from the clutches of a demanding calendar. It's finding a haven that strikes a rare balance: somewhere that’s easy to reach, but feels a million miles from everyday life. At just three hours by train from London (and two from Manchester stations), the Quay Hotel & Spa offers precisely that.

Arriving at the Water’s Edge
I love a retreat that gets straight down to business. From the moment I arrived I felt transported, with the sense of calm that comes from slipping out of a busy week and into the slow pace of a forgotten corner of the coast. No sooner had I checked into my room than I found myself gazing out of my private balcony, watching sailboats bob in Deganwy Marina and the waters of Conwy Estuary shimmer in the hues of an approaching sunset.
It was the kind of view that pulls you straight out of your busy thoughts and has you reaching for a bathrobe and a glass of something chilled, preferably with bubbles. With a cool refreshment in hand, the smell of salt in the air, and the medieval towers of the UNESCO-listed Conwy Castle across the bay, it was hard to believe the noise of city life was just a few hours down the tracks.

Inside the Newly Refurbished Wellness Suite
The following morning, with the tide out and boats beached under a clear blue sky, I made my way to the Spa at the Quay. Having undergone an extensive refurbishment, the new wellness suite was the main reason for my visit, and I was keen to explore the facilities first-hand.
Featuring multiple saunas, an aromatherapy room, hydrotherapy spa pool and more, the environment has been thoughtfully designed to balance relaxation with a plethora of holistic health benefits. I start my journey with the foot spa, where gentle jets in warm water stimulate acupressure points over the soles of my feet. Believed to improve circulation and ease tension, it proved a wonderfully grounding introduction to the thermal experience.
From there I moved onto the aromatherapy room, which pairs essential oil blends like menthol, eucalyptus and rosemary with a lower, 38 degree temperature. Combined with an ambient humidity level, it offers a soothing experience and a gentler setting to traditional, high-intensity saunas.
As someone who regularly pushes their body a little too hard in the gym, I was especially keen to try out the infrared sauna. A timber-clad sanctuary, this was perhaps my favourite facility on-site, with radiant panels and a gentle, 35 degree temperature creating the perfect conditions for relaxation. For regular users, infrared light exposure can also be instrumental in soft tissue repair and cardiovascular support, which is an appealing prospect for anyone with an active lifestyle.
From there, the morning seemed to melt away. A blast in the hot sauna to harness the benefits of dry heat, before a cooling soak in the hydrotherapy spa pool. An hour stretched out on a poolside lounger with a book, followed by a lingering spell in the fragrant steam room. By the time I retreated to the spa cafe for a Quay Cream Tea, my shoulders had softened, my breathing had slowed, and I was feeling ready to savour what followed.
Bespoke OSKIA Treatments, Tailored to You
For those of us constantly balancing deadlines and demands, a day to oneself in a beautiful spa is a blessing. Perhaps the greatest luxury though, is the opportunity to hand over some decision-making—to strike off one thing from the mental load and trust an expert to diagnose exactly what your body needs on that day.
So I was pleased to discover not one, but two bespoke treatments available, both designed in partnership with OSKIA, a nutri-cosmeceutical beauty brand backed by internationally-recognised doctors and dermatologists. The first was the OSKIA Bespoke Warm Oil Massage, which started with a consultation to discover areas of focus for the treatment, and utilised the Skin Soothing Love and Massage Candle.

The second was the OSKIA Bespoke Radiance Renewal Facial, in which the therapist selected and administered a selection of OSKIA products in response to my skincare needs. These included the Renaissance cleanser, a vitamin-and-enzyme-rich gel ideal for combination and dry skin; the Renaissance mask, an MSM-infused solution with rose and chamomile notes; the Midnight Elixir Serum to support night-time repair; and the Eye Wonder Eye Cream, a nutri-active serum to protect against UV damage and city pollution.
