Table for 1, Please: A Solo Date in Mayfair, With a Marylebone Detour

Okay, I have a theory. The hardest part of taking yourself somewhere lovely is the first five minutes. You walk in alone, ask for a table and briefly convince yourself that everyone has noticed. Perhaps they have. More likely, they’re deciding what to order. Either way, that moment of self-consciousness is the bit that stops so many of us before we’ve even opened the menu.
Stay a little longer and something shifts. You stop checking the door, put your phone away and take your time choosing lunch. There’s nobody to consult, no schedule to negotiate and no reason to rush. I used to find that uncomfortable. Now, it feels like a small luxury: an afternoon that belongs entirely to me.
This month’s solo date in Mayfair happened almost by accident, after my plans changed. Rather than write off the day, I decided to make something of it. Tea, a proper lunch, a little wandering and a book to take home. Here’s how it unfolded.

10.30am: Tea in the foyer at Four Seasons Hotel London at Park Lane
My first stop? The foyer. Excellent people-watching requires a little strategy.
The seating area near Pavyllon is a lovely spot to settle in and watch the arrivals. For such a grand hotel, it feels surprisingly relaxed. There are high ceilings, plenty of light and just enough coming and going to keep you entertained. If you need a change of scene to reset your mood, this is a very good place to start.
I put my phone in my bag rather than on the table and gave myself fifteen minutes to enjoy being there. No scrolling, no catching up on messages. Just tea.
Standard tea: approx. £9-£16

1pm: Lunch at the bar at Pavyllon
We’re not going far. Pavyllon is right here inside the Four Seasons, and I see no reason to interrupt a perfectly good afternoon with unnecessary travel.
My advice is to take a seat at the bar. It makes eating alone feel easy, and on a quieter day there’s time to chat with the team. On my last visit, a crew arrived to film The Real Housewives of London, which certainly gave me something to watch between courses. I came for lunch and left with rather more entertainment than I’d expected. The food and attentive service would have been reason enough to stay.
Lunch: ~£38
2.30pm: A wander through Mayfair
No itinerary for this part. That’s rather the point.
Walk through Mount Street and Carlos Place without somewhere else to be. The shopfronts deserve a proper look, rather than the passing glance they get when you’re hurrying to a meeting. Window-shop, wander inside if something catches your eye, or simply keep walking. For once, you don’t need to achieve anything.

3.15pm: A bench in Mount Street Gardens
Tucked behind the church, Mount Street Gardens is easy to miss if you’re not looking for the entrance. That makes finding it feel all the more satisfying.
Pick up a coffee on the way and find a bench. I spend so much of my day moving on to the next thing that sitting still, with nowhere urgent to go, feels like a treat in itself.
Coffee: ~£5
4pm: Daunt Books, Marylebone
From here, it’s a walk or a short taxi ride to Marylebone, depending on how your feet are feeling.
Head for the oak galleries at Daunt Books and give yourself time to browse. You don’t need a reading list or a particular title in mind. Pick up whatever catches your attention, read a few pages and choose something you’ll look forward to opening later. A book is my favourite sort of souvenir from an afternoon like this.
Book: approximately £16

The Solo Date Total
Tea in the foyer £16
Lunch at Pavyllon £38
Coffee £5
Book £16
Total: £75

The pleasure of your own company
The thing I keep coming back to is that a table for one doesn’t need an explanation. Changed plans might have prompted this afternoon, but they weren’t what made it good. I chose where to go, what to eat and how long to linger.
Nobody at the bar knew my name, my job or where I was heading next. And, honestly, I rather liked that. There’s something freeing about being a stranger for an afternoon, with a good lunch in front of you and nothing to prove. I’ll be booking another table for one.
